Nestled beside the River Tees with the Cleveland Hills as a backdrop, the 6,289 yard James Braid course is both picturesque and demanding due to the rolling terrain and sloping greens. The course is a great challenge for both novice and experienced golfers alike.
There are two signature holes at Eaglescliffe; the Par5 14th where the tee shot must be played across a bend in the River Tees; and also the 17th, a downhill 170 yard Par3 across the Pond to a double tiered green.

Hole 1
328 yards, Par 4
A slight dog-leg hole which has a distant backdrop of the Cleveland Hills from both tee and green. The ideal drive is over a valley to a plateau, preferably right of centre which gives the easiest shot into the green. Trees to both sides of the fairway can punish the errant drive as can a ditch on the far left side towards the green. The green slopes slightly from back to front and left to right.

Hole 2
383 yards, Par 4
A hole that belies its distance because of the selection of club required to overcome the nature of the fairway, its rig and furrow ground sloping right to left together with the prevailing wind conditions. There are trees on both sides of the fairway with thick rough between the fairway and the greenkeeper’s building on the right. A well bunkered green sloping from back to front has the additional deterrent of a ditch running alongside between the green and the adjacent fairway.

Hole 3
450 yards, Par 4
A dog-leg to the right with the elevated tee helping to drive over the ridge around 190 yards away, but a bunker on the edge of the fairway can catch an ambitious shot. The decision on the second shot down a tree lined fairway to a relatively flat green bunkered on both sides can depend on wind conditions.

Hole 4
161 yards, Par 3
It is dependent on the tee in use whether the tee shot is along or slightly across the green, but both shots are against the prevailing winds. There is a ditch to the right of the green that can catch the wayward shot, trees along the left of the hole and to the right of the green can also cause problems as can the front left, and back right, bunkers.ght, bunkers.

Hole 5
357 yards, Par 4
This green only has a single bunker on the right side, but is also protected by ponds to the front left and front of the green. With out of bounds and trees along the right hand side of the hole and out of bounds behind the green, placement of the drive across the dog-leg is important to minimise the difficulty and distance of the approach shot to a green that slopes slightly from back to front.

Hole 6
148 yards, Par 3
A short par three, but the elevated two tier green adds to the difficulty and effective playing length of the hole. Bunkers short and to each side of the green together with trees and thick rough along the right hand side of the hole can catch the mishit tee shot.

Hole 7
280 yards, Par 4
Playing from an elevated tee the ground falls away to a valley with a ditch on the left side, there is a bunker in the middle of the fairway some 75 yards from the green and a further ditch running up the right side of the rough. The green, protected by three bunkers has to be treated with respect in view of its unique features.

Hole 8
348 yards, Par 4
A flat landing area beyond a valley can be seen from the tee, with the greenkeepers’ workshop followed by a ditch and trees on the left, and trees along the right of the hole. The second shot has to be well judged because of another valley in front of a green which is guarded by bunkers on both sides and one at back right.

Hole 9
496 yards, Par 5
The drive is over approximately100 yards of rough ground normally to a point short of a roadway which is some 250 yards from the tee. The roadway is followed by a ridge, 200 yards from the green and another ridge in a further 100 yards, at which point copses of trees are located on both sides of the fairway. There is a bunker located some 30 yards from the entrance to the green which is well guarded by a bunker on the left and two on the right.

Hole 10
347 yards, Par 4
Drive over a valley to a rig and furrow fairway with trees and out of bounds to the left and trees on the right, there is also a bunker on each side of the fairway to catch the slightly wayward tee shot. Bunkers are also located on each side of the green which has hidden falls.

Hole 11
318 yards, Par 4
The fairway runs down into a valley and rises after 200 yards with a bunker at the top of the right hand upslope. There are also trees on both sides of the upslope and bunkers are situated to the front left and right of a green on which care must be taken with the positioning of the approach shot due to its nature and contour.

Hole 12
477 yards, Par 5
Out of bounds on the right for the full length of the hole with trees on both sides of the fairway. There is a bunker to the right of the fairway short of a roadway which crosses the fairway some 240 yards from the tee. The fairway runs down to a hollow in front of the green which has a bunker short right together with two greenside bunkers.

Hole 13
179 yards, Par 3
With out of bounds to the right, play is from an elevated tee to a green guarded by bunkers on both sides. The ground runs down to the green which tends to slope left to right and has a deceptive front to back slope at its entrance.

Hole 14
531 yards, Par 5
This, the signature hole of the course has the River Tees on the right hand side for its full length. The challenging drive can be over the corner of the tree lined river bank or down the left side of the fairway and take the chance of being gathered by a mature ash tree, some 160 yards from the tee or a strategically placed bunker further down the fairway. The fairway is tree lined on both sides with five further bunkers to catch the second shot. The green is relatively flat, with a bunker located on each side of its entrance.

Hole 15
478 yards, Par 5
The hole is a dog-leg left, trees on both sides of the fairway with a ridge around 230 yards from the tee and a bunker off the left hand short of the ridge. The fairway is rig and furrow to a hollow in front of the green which is guarded by a tree and a bunker on each side of the green. The green has a very deceptive slope towards the river.

Hole 16
467 yards, Par 4
Trees run down both sides of the fairway which again is rig and furrow and slopes left to right. There is a ditch at right angles to the fairway on both sides at around 150 yards from a green that has bunkers on both sides and again some deceptive borrows.

Hole 17
174 yards, Par 3
Played from the elevated tee, the pond which is immediately in front of the green can clearly be seen, the open ditches to the right and left feed and drain the pond. As the green is two tier, it is important to hit the level on which the pin is situated to avoid tricky putting. A single bunker to the right of the green, but well below green level has the habit of gathering pushed tee shots.

Hole 18
367 yards, Par 4
A drive over the pond onto a fairway which tends to throw the ball left towards an open ditch some 150 yards from the green, attempting to hit the right hand side of the fairway can bring some mature trees and scrub into play. Out of bounds along the right hand side starts at around 120 yards from a green that is relatively flat with bunkers short left and to the right of the entrance.
